My Workshops for Writers

At The Highlights Foundation:

The Whole Novel Workshop:

Take your novel to the next level! Our instructors will challenge you to look at your novel critically and to find openings and opportunities for revision. This comprehensive workshop includes one-on-one sessions, lectures, group discussions, and writing exercises to support and facilitate your creative process. The goal is to help you revise and polish your novel in preparation for submission.

Get To Know Your Characters:

Deepen your understanding of your characters and how they are the foundation for every aspect of your story. Explore resources and complete writing exercises to unlock your characters’ secrets and make decisions about your point of view, plot, pacing and more. Participate in weekly faculty LIVE lectures and Q&A sessions, and receive faculty feedback on your work.

Character can tell you so much about your story, both what goes “on the page” and what happens behind the scenes. In this course, you will:

  • Engage in Q&A sessions and hear weekly faculty lectures.
  • Explore resources and complete writing exercises (2 per week).
  • Participate in a community forum to connect with peers.
  • Receive editor or agent feedback on your cover letter, synopsis, and the first 10 pages of your novel.

Here’s my PW interview, if you want to know even more about me!

NO TIME FOR CLASS, BUT YOU NEED SOME FEEDBACK? WORK ONE ON ONE WITH ME!

Every great one-on-one experience begins with getting to know each other. I like to know where you are in your writing journey. Is this your first novel? Do you belong to a critique group? What kinds of feedback have worked for you in the past? What craft books and novels do you keep next to your desk?

Once we know each other, the work begins. We will find the glimmers in your manuscript and together, chart a plan for revision!

“Sarah Aronson helped me see the ‘glimmers’ in my work in progress and provided specific feedback on how to move forward. She is a caring teacher who wants to see her students succeed.” —Melanie Fishbane, author of Maud: A Novel Inspired by the Life of L.M. Montgomery

“Sarah Aronson has mentored me throughout my writing life—from the first draft of my first novel to the polished manuscript that recently attracted an agent. She is an outstanding educator, craft genius, cheerleader, commiserator, and friend to her students. Sarah asks hard questions AND provides the love and enthusiasm that makes answering them a joy.” —Ashley Walker

“Sarah is a gifted teacher with the superpowers of knowing what her students need to hear and being the best cheerleader ever!” —Dale Marie Bryan

“Sarah is my go-to person when I face self-doubt about the stories I want to tell. She reminds me that the best way to promote social justice and equity as a Muslim storyteller, is simply by allowing myself to use my own voice, and to remember to play, play, play! Her sense of humor and mama bear reassurance, supported by her insights on the fundamentals of craft, offer me the motivation I need to move forward whenever I feel stuck. She’s simply the best!” —Narmeen Lakhani

“Sarah Aronson is the most generous writer I know, a source of support and cheerleading from the starting gate to the finish line. Her talent as a writing teacher comes from her ability to ask the questions that push a writer to confront their story in new ways, all while communicating that she fully believes in them and their story. I have no doubt that I would not be a published writer today if I hadn’t met her over ten years ago.” —Tziporah Cohen, No Vacancy, Groundwood Books, 2020

“I have read Rube Goldberg with multiple age groups. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why everyone loves this book!  Sarah’s writing and her teaching help to uncomplicate what can be a daunting puzzle of a process.” —Roxanne F. Owens, PhD. / Chair, Teacher Education / Associate Professor, Children’s Literature / DePaul University

“Einstein said that, ‘Creativity is intelligence having fun.’ That is the foundation of any of the courses that Sarah teaches. She provides a safe space for rich conversations about the craft of writing, is generous with her time and shares her extensive knowledge and experience. You leave her classes with the confidence to preserve, write and create.” —Tina Athaide, author of Orange for the Sunsets

“Sarah totally gets what I am trying to do! Her keen insight, and passion for my story, have helped me hone in on my main character’s emotional journey, as well as create a road map for a strong revision. Yay!” —Rondi Frieder

“Sarah Aronson is not just an extraordinary teacher for me on my writing journey; she is also the mentor, counselor, and inspirational friend I could not live without. I am so grateful to be able to learn from her workshops, brainstorming sessions, one-on-one talks, and to follow her on the storytelling path.” —Ren Hanámi, author of NINJA MOM and TENGONIS in the TIKI
